Slaying Suspect Freed for Lack of Evidence

An Oxnard man arrested on suspicion of murder was released from jail Monday when prosecutors declined to file charges against him.

“We just don’t have enough evidence to charge him at this time,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Donald C. Glynn said.

Glynn said Oxnard police searched Douglas Wickham’s Oxnard home twice over the weekend in an attempt to link him to the shooting death of J. Bert Deck.

Deck’s body was found Jan. 30 in an orchard at Pidduck and Nauman roads. But police believe Deck was killed outside an apartment building at Sanford Street and Rose Avenue, where his Harley Davidson motorcycle was found.

Deck, of Oxnard, was shot in the head with a handgun, investigators said. Wickham and Deck were known to drink together at a south Oxnard bar on Ventura Road, police said.

Glynn said Wickham remains a suspect in the slaying and could be arrested again if investigators develop new leads.
