City to Get Navy Site for Recreation Center

Where thousands of workers once made missiles for the Navy, Pomona officials are hoping to create new prosperity.

As the first step toward revitalizing the former General Dynamics missile plant, a part of the 166-acre plant will spring back to life as a recreation center for the city, Pomona officials said Monday.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) told city officials last Friday that the federal government will turn over the Navy-owned site’s 11-acre park and recreational facility to the city in the next few months. Until the plant’s closure in 1992, missile workers used the facilities, which include a gymnasium, softball diamond, tennis courts and track.

The Navy also will turn over an additional 26 acres for a recycling facility and 15 acres to widen and improve the Corona Freeway.

Reuse of the property on West Mission Boulevard is the cornerstone of Pomona’s economic development effort.

City Project Manager Todd Hooks said the city expects to purchase the remaining property in the next few months for $8 million to $15 million and convert it into a manufacturing hub for the inland area.

“Pomona’s initiative is an example of how cities can create opportunities that translate into jobs,” said Boxer, who garnered federal support for the city’s plans.
