Bolsa Chica Beach Cleaned Up, Reopened
Bolsa Chica State Beach was reopened Tuesday after crews finished removing syringes and other medical waste that had washed ashore last weekend.
Workers hand-sifting through mounds of debris on the beach found nearly two dozen more syringes Tuesday, Bolsa Chica lifeguard supervisor Joseph Milligan said.
“The frustration is, we are having to hand-pick the area,” Milligan said. “The area has a lot of natural debris such as driftwood and kelp.”
The workers raked the debris then sorted it by hand, fearing the use of heavy equipment could bury syringes in the sand, Milligan said.
More than 100 syringes and other medical waste such as vials were recovered from Bolsa Chica and Sunset Beach, which was reopened Monday.
People who walk on the beaches should be careful and look down, officials said.
Officials were trying to determine the source of the debris.
