Works Recovered, Declared ‘Fakes’: Three artworks stolen at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport were not really Picassos and Pissarros, as their owner--and apparently the thieves--had believed, investigators said Wednesday. “They’re fakes, in the opinion of the experts,” an FBI spokesman said. Police recovered the three stolen artworks undamaged and arrested a Kennedy Airport cargo handler and his alleged accomplice Tuesday night. The works had been stolen late last week after Avelino Espinosa Gonzalez, an airline passenger from Mexico, left them in storage overnight at the airport. Gonzalez, who was bringing the works to New York for appraisals by major auction houses, had believed they were valued at $13 million.
