Cypress Holds Off Century

Share

Cypress did what it had to do to win its second consecutive Empire League title Wednesday night, but it wasn’t pretty.

Seventh-ranked Cypress got 20 points from senior Chad Boberg and held on to beat Century, 40-33.

A Century victory would have created a tie for first place.

“They are so scrappy. They make the game ugly,” Cypress Coach Tom Gorrell said. “We’ll take the win, but we were fortunate to get it.”

Cypress struggled to inbound the ball all night against a soft full-court press, and turned the ball over 13 times, with eight coming in the second half. Most of those came during a third-quarter stretch in which Century whittled a 27-14 deficit down to a three-point margin.

Hector Beltran finished with 10 points for Century.
