Kris King, who usually makes his point with his fists, couldn’t remember the last time he had been so successful with a stick in his hand. King had a goal and two assists Thursday night at Winnipeg as the Jets defeated the Ottawa Senators, 6-2.

The Jets were playing their first game since Teemu Selanne was traded Wednesday to the Mighty Ducks. A few in the crowd of 8,673 carried banners calling for the popular Selanne’s return, while one banner called for the firing of General Manager John Paddock.

The players acquired for Selanne, center Chad Kilger and defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky, made uneventful starts in their first games as Jets. Coach Terry Simpson said they were adjusting to new teammates.

Keith Tkachuk and Darren Turcotte each scored two goals for Winnipeg and Mike Stapleton also had a goal for the Jets.

Rob Gaudreau and Tom Chorske had goals for the Senators, whose 9-42-2 record is the NHL’s worst.

Florida 3, Detroit 1--Johan Garpenlov and Geoff Smith each scored in the third period at Miami as the Panthers ended the Red Wings’ 10-game unbeaten streak. Detroit’s unbeaten streak tied for the longest in the NHL this season.

Florida goalie John Vanbiesbrouck earned his 20th victory of the season. Vanbiesbrouck (20-10-5) stopped 29 shots. Greg Johnson scored Detroit’s only goal, which came 11 minutes into the game.

The Red Wings have the NHL’s best record, while the Panthers trail only the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference.

New York Rangers 6, New York Islanders 2--The Rangers returned to Madison Square Garden after a two-week road trip and extended their home-ice unbeaten streak to 23 games behind Ray Ferraro’s two goals.

Calgary 4, Washington 4--Calle Johansson scored one goal and set up two, including the tying goal by Dale Hunter with 2:46 left at Calgary. Keith Jones also had two goals for the Capitals in what started as a wide-open scoring fest.
