DEJA VU: Four years ago, Ventura Unified School District trustees backed off on a proposal that would have transferred hillside kids from Buena to Ventura High School, opting to have only Montalvo teens make the move. Now the board wants to shift the students they exempted before (B1). . . . Trustee Cliff Rodrigues says it’s time to make the change, despite concerns by some parents. “We realize we’re not going to make everyone happy on this. But we have to look out for the best interest of all students,” he said.

KEEPING TRACK: A list of convicted child molesters released by Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren (A19) includes about a dozen, ages 34 to 67, from Ventura County. That compares with 187 from Los Angeles County and eight from Santa Barbara County. . . . Spokesmen for the state attorney general’s office said the binders were mailed Friday and should be available at local police and sheriff’s departments by Tuesday.

TOTAL IMMERSION: Cheryl Scott was thrilled with her son’s progress in Santa Paula’s Spanish Immersion program (B1). So when daughter Jennifer hit the first grade, she hit the bilingual trail, too. . . . Jennifer, a second-grader, isn’t fluent yet, but fifth-grader Robert is. In fact, Scott said, Robert is helping his older brother with his Spanish homework, adding that she sees no downside to the program.

CHARTER CHANGE: A decision by the state Board of Education to waive a 100-school limit on charter schools has drawn praise from education reform advocates (A18). The state has about 80 such schools, which are exempt from most state and local regulations. . . . There are no charter schools in Ventura County, although that’s not due to one educator’s lack of trying. Ojai resident Deanna Nakosteen lost a bid to start one in her city a year ago. Nakosteen, who now is teaching in the Ojai school district’s home-schooling program, says she won’t try to launch another charter in Ojai.
