Obituaries : Daniel V. Martinez; 33-Year Ventura Resident

Daniel V. Martinez, a longtime Ventura resident and outdoorsman, died Friday. He was 67.

Born March 2, 1928, in North Platte, Neb., Martinez began working as a farm laborer in his teens. He traveled throughout the Midwest and California before settling in Ventura, where he lived for the past 33 years.

In the 1940s, Martinez lived in Sacramento, where he worked in a cement-pipe factory before moving to Santa Barbara to work as a forklift operator for Hurst Concrete.

In 1953, he met his wife, Gloria, at a dance in Santa Barbara.

In 1961, they married and moved to Ventura, as Hurst Concrete was transferring its operations there.

Martinez retired in 1990 and spent his retirement years helping to raise his grandsons.

He enjoyed fishing and camping and often spoke of the adventures of traveling when he was young.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Ventura; two daughters, Rachel of Sacramento and Denise of Ventura; four sisters; two brothers, and two grandsons.

A rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church in Ventura, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will follow at the Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura.
