Landfill Task Force Targets Recycling

Share

Consumers and manufacturers need to use less and recycle more, and a proposed $1-million public education program would help accomplish that.

According to a report by a task force established to examine steps to prepare for the July 1 closure of the Lopez Canyon Landfill, the city’s Department of Sanitation needs to beef up its recycling program through public awareness and other projects.

The 400-acre landfill accepts about 80% of the city’s trash.

The task force will present a status report to the City Council today.

One proposal calls for the creation of recycling public awareness campaigns that target elementary schools, community organizations and manufacturers.

Only 40.5% of the city’s waste is recyclable, the report noted.

Another proposal would implement a pilot project to add apartment buildings of 20 units or less to the city’s curbside recycling program, while a third would seek to educate city employees to recycle more office products.

The task force also is looking at East Valley sites to build a facility to sort out recyclable materials from other waste.
