Carjacker Eludes Police in Cemetery
A gunman hijacked a car from a woman at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Wednesday, then eluded a force of Glendale, Burbank and Los Angeles police searching the 400-acre cemetery.
An unidentified woman notified Forest Lawn administrators that her 1993 Lexus had been stolen at gunpoint around 3:45 p.m.
The only exit gates were immediately closed, police said.
Apparently lost inside the cemetery, the carjacker abandoned the car after speeding randomly through the grounds for a few minutes, police said. Leaving his gun in the car, he escaped on foot into thick bushes and was never found, police said.
The search, supported by a police helicopter and dogs, lasted 2 1/2 hours.
The carjacker was described as a Latino man, 30 to 35 years old, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, and wearing a maroon suit coat with a white shirt, according to police.
No injuries were reported in the carjacking, police said.
