PERILOUS: The spectacular stunts we see on film are rehearsed with split-second precision. But while safety is being stressed more than ever, Sunday Calendar (Page 8) notes that a string of high-profile accidents has taken a deadly toll. . . . Today’s special report is the first of two parts on the world of stunt performers.

HOME-GROWN: Many of those performers live in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys. Denise Lynn Roberts, who has doubled Meg Ryan, Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep, lives in Lake View Terrace, and Jon Epstein, who does stunts for Chuck Norris, lives in Agoura Hills. . . . Veteran stuntman Loren Janes, who raised two children in Canyon Country, says a new stunt family has just moved in.

RADIO DAYS: Collectors gathered in Van Nuys on Saturday to bid on hundreds of antique radios and other sound equipment put up for auction. Many of the radios didn’t work, but the collectors didn’t care (B1).

OFFICIAL THANKS: For years, Bert and Jane Boeckmann have been two of the Valley’s busiest philanthropists. Individually, they’ve each received the Fernando Award for their volunteer work. Last week, the couple received another accolade: an official thumbs-up from the L.A. City Council. . . . The Boeckmanns were thanked for their generosity in a resolution presented by Councilman Hal Bernson.
