Osgood Is Too Good for Toronto

Scotty Bowman has said Mike Vernon is his No. 1 goaltender, but the Detroit Red Wings’ coach will have to reassess the situation if Chris Osgood keeps this up.

Osgood stopped 38 shots Sunday at Toronto and was the main reason the Red Wings prevailed, 3-2, over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Osgood, 28-5-3 with a 2.2 goals-against average, has an undefeated streak of 12 games stretching back five weeks.

Pittsburgh 4, New York Rangers 3--Mario Lemieux directed in a rebound of Tomas Sandstrom’s shot in overtime to rally the Penguins at Pittsburgh.

Ranger goaltender Mike Richter, making his first start since Dec. 30, re-injured his groin and was lifted midway through the first period.

St. Louis 3, Winnipeg 0--Brett Hull extended his point-scoring streak to 10 games with a goal at St. Louis and Grant Fuhr recorded his second shutout.

St. Louis left wing Geoff Courtnall suffered a broken left hand in the second period.

New Jersey 3, Washington 0--Brian Rolston scored two third-period goals and Martin Brodeur made 21 saves at East Rutherford, N.J., for his fifth shutout of the season and the 11th of his career.

Chicago 4, Edmonton 1--Ed Belfour maintained his mastery of the Oilers and Chris Chelios scored twice in the third period for the Blackhawks at Chicago.

Florida 6, Dallas 4--Ed Jovanovski’s goal with 6:07 left broke a tie and Jesse Belanger set up three goals at Miami as the Panthers got their team-record 34th victory.
