Police to Set Up Sobriety Checkpoint
As part of the Oxnard Police Department’s efforts to crack down on drunk drivers, officers will hold their second sobriety checkpoint of 1996 on Friday in west Oxnard.
Starting at 7 p.m., officers will arrest suspected drunk drivers and cite unlicensed motorists caught at the checkpoint as part of the department’s campaign to remove these drivers from streets before they have an accident.
During the first year of checkpoints, in 1995, the department screened more than 12,400 drivers at 14 checkpoints. Police said they arrested 73 suspected drunk drivers and cited 374 motorists for license violations.
According to police, the checkpoint program lowered Oxnard’s number of alcohol-related traffic accidents by 28.6%.
