Garcia Breaks School Record for UCI Swimmers

UC Irvine’s Gabby Garcia set a school record in women’s swimming, with a time of 24.28 seconds the 50-yard freestyle, at the Big West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday.

Garcia, who finished fifth in the race at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, broke her record of 24.40, set this season.

After the first day of competition, Nevada is leading the women’s event with 226 points. Nevada Las Vegas is second (160) and three-time defending champion UC Santa Barbara is third.

In the men’s competition, UNLV leads with 232 points followed by Santa Barbara with 193. Host Irvine is sixth.

In nonconference baseball:

La Verne 3, Southern California College 2--La Verne scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to win. Brian Nolan had two hits, including a double, an RBI and a run scored for SCC (2-9).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 71, Chapman 69--Kathy Kaupu scored 19 points and teammate Monique Sweet scored 16 points for Chapman (13-11) in its regular-season finale.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 6, Cal Poly Pomona 1--Ryan Lewis won, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 singles for Southern California College (1-2).
