Speed Limits Hiked on Stretches of 4 Streets

In changes related to a traffic consultant’s study of city streets, speed limits in four areas will rise to 45 mph, the City Council voted this week.

The four areas, where the speed limit was formerly 40 mph, are:

* Bushard Street between Garfield and Edinger avenues;

* Heil Avenue between Magnolia and Brookhurst streets;

* Heil between Euclid Street and Harbor Boulevard;

* and Ellis Avenue between Newland and Bushard streets.

The council also agreed to lower the speed limit to 40 mph on Slater Avenue between Newland and Bushard streets from 45 mph.

The city staff will continue studying changes proposed for two sections of Ward Avenue.

Wayne S. Osborne, the city’s public works director, said that a traffic study must be done every five years if the police use radar to enforce speed violations.

“You cannot hand out speeding tickets using radar unless you have speed study on file with the courts that’s less than five years old,” he said.
