Two surfers were saved but a third was lost in high waves Saturday off Ocean Beach.

The Coast Guard called off its search for the missing surfer nearly 90 minutes after he vanished, and he was presumed dead, Lt. Greg Mitchell said.

The three, all foreign nationals, were surfing without wetsuits in high water, wind and cold when they were overwhelmed by the waves. A man and a woman in their 20s made their way out of the water with the help of several onlookers or park police. They were taken to a hospital, treated for hypothermia and released.

No names were released, but the missing surfer is believed to be a 26-year-old man, Mitchell said. All three are in the United States on work visas.
