Ends of the Earth

One of my favorite things to do each Sunday is to read the Travel section, but you really scored points with the lengthy article on Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (“Ends of the Earth,” Jan. 28).

Having traveled to Bishkek two summers ago, I drank in every word of the article, reliving sights, sounds and smells of this little-known and mysterious country.

My trip was as unpredictable as the one described in the article (including just trying to get there), but that’s all part of the adventure when traveling in Central Asia. I found the people of Kyrgyzstan to be warm, generous and proud of their culture and heritage. The local cuisine and fresh produce was simply wonderful. The few of us who have had the pleasure of experiencing Kyrgyzstan thank you for straying off the beaten path!

Kenneth Turan, author of the Jan. 28 story on Burkina Faso, is a fantastic travel writer! His sentences are a joy to read, and he brings his powers of deciphering the meaning of what his eyes see to this form of “critique” as well.
