Cable TV Franchise on Council Agenda

Share

A proposal to transfer Anaheim’s cable TV franchise is the topic for a public hearing at today’s 5 p.m. City Council meeting.

The franchise, due to expire in January 1997, is now held by MultiVision Cable TV, which is being sold to Century Valley Cable Corp.

Under the Anaheim proposal, Century would take over the franchise for the remaining 10 months of its term. Century would be required to maintain existing levels of service, including public access and broadcasts of City Council meetings.

Discussions between Century and the city to renew the franchise for another term would be held later.

Also today, a workshop at 3 p.m. will focus on a plan to raise utility fees to help pay for street repairs.

City officials are concerned that underground utility lines providing gas, cable TV, phone and electrical service are causing streets to deteriorate prematurely, resulting in costly maintenance.

After a presentation by city staff members, the council is expected to set a public hearing on the issue.
