Panel Says More Space Should Go to the Dogs
How much running room do Costa Mesa’s dogs need? Apparently more than they have now.
So many dogs have been using the city’s only “bark park,” which opened in October 1994, that they have completely worn away the grass in the fenced-off corner of Tewinkle Memorial Park where they are allowed to frolic free of leashes.
The grass-free area has gotten particularly messy of late as rains have turned it into a mud hole. Efforts to replant the grass have failed because the turf is torn up again as soon as the canines return to romp.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Committee is offering another solution: Increase the size of the park. The panel proposes that, by giving dogs an extra acre of ground, the city would ease the wear on the rest of the park.
Only one section of the bark park would be open at a time, giving the other fields an opportunity to recover.
