Update / Follow-up on the news : Cost to Join County Radio Network Rises
Under a revised agreement to join a countywide emergency communications system, the City Council has agreed to contribute $579,065 more than it had first anticipated.
The total cost to the city to be linked to the county’s 800-megahertz radio system is now about $5.9 million, said Bob Franz, deputy city administrator.
The county’s bankruptcy left it unable to pay what it had projected for the $83-million system, so cities were asked to pay more.
The city has $1.9 million earmarked for the project, Franz said last week, and is studying options for financing the rest.
The new system will replace a 23-year-old network that law enforcement agencies say is outdated and inefficient. The new system will coordinate emergency response with Huntington Beach’s police, fire, marine safety services as well as public works.
