A twin-engine airliner bound for Toronto appeared to blow an engine Saturday on takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport, but the pilot was able to circle the area and land the plane safely, authorities said.

None of the 192 passengers and crew aboard Air Canada flight 792 was injured, said Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. More than 50 firefighters stood by as the Boeing 767 touched back down at 2:14 p.m. after experiencing a serious engine malfunction while taking off.

“The pilot made a very skillful landing,” Humphrey said. “Our helmets are certainly off to the pilots and crew for handling the situation so adroitly.”
