Mayor Riordan and Diversity

Share

I wish Cynthia McClain-Hill (“City Hall Can’t Be Run Like a Boardroom,” Commentary, Feb. 9) had attended a recent breakfast for women entrepreneurs and witnessed the support and appreciation of the attendees for Mayor Richard Riordan’s work in the diversity arena. The women who were invited to this breakfast were achievers--people who had earned positions of responsibility--who were also minorities.

We all know that quick-fix solutions are a waste of time and money, and there is a lot of talk about access and opportunity. But someone has to walk the talk! And Mayor Riordan is doing just that. He has made remarkable strides in reaching out to all segments of our diverse city. His Minority Business Opportunity Committee (MBOC) is an example of exploring issues surrounding work force diversity, cultural differences and management sensitivity. This committee hosts meetings to educate both the small business community and procurement agencies and ensure maximum opportunity for minority firms to participate in the city’s economic activities.

In my meetings with Mayor Riordan and his staff, I see him as being committed to extending opportunity to people throughout our city, whatever their race, religion, or zip code. I’m sold on his understanding of diversity issues.
