City Endorses Plan to Use INS Help in Jails
A plan for a federal pilot project in Anaheim involving immigration control has won endorsement from the Cypress City Council.
Anaheim has proposed having a federal Immigration and Naturalization Service officer assigned to its city jail. The INS officer would identify for possible deportation those suspected of being illegal immigrants.
In a letter to the Cypress City Council, Anaheim Councilman Bob Zemel wrote: “Rough estimates indicate that the City of Anaheim spends over $1 million per year in processing and incarcerating criminal aliens.”
Zemel said Cypress and other Orange County cities could benefit from what Anaheim learns if it follows through with the pilot project.
