Post Office Contract on Tuesday’s Agenda

Share

Awarding a contract for construction of a new post office downtown will be among the items considered at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. City staff members are recommending that the job go to Martin J. Jaska Inc., which bid $1.15 million.

Work is to begin this spring on the new facility, which the city Redevelopment Agency agreed to pay for as part of a deal negotiated with the federal government in November.

Anaheim agreed to give the government a 16,000-square-foot site at Broadway and Clementine and build a post office there.

In exchange, the city will acquire the 33,000-square-foot property at 311 W. Broadway where the current post office stands. After the new post office opens, the old one will be demolished to make way for further downtown redevelopment.

Also on the council agenda is a discussion of Measure T, which would establish a county charter if approved by voters March 26. The council is considering taking a position on the ballot measure.

After speakers for and against the measure make their statements, a representative of the League of Women Voters will evaluate the issues involved.

Those favoring Measure T argue that it would create a management system similar to the standard in private business. Opponents contend that it would place too much power in the hands of bureaucrats.

The council meeting will be 5 p.m. at City Hall, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
