Bill Shumard, praised by Long Beach State officials for his marketing and fund-raising skills, was named interim athletic director Friday by President Robert Maxson.

Shumard, 45, replaces Dave O’Brien, who recently became athletic director at Temple. Shumard, formerly the Cal State Fullerton athletic director, is the assistant vice president for Long Beach university relations and development. Shumard assumes his new duties May 1.

“I’m excited and I have some big shoes to fill,” said Shumard, in Reno attending the Big West Conference basketball tournaments.

Maxson appointed Shumard after meeting with the 49ers’ head coaches to determine their top choice for interim athletic director. Maxson also sought input from the athletic department’s support staff.

Bill Husak, the school’s associate athletic director, also was considered. Shumard’s extensive background in sports finance was key in Maxson’s decision.

“There’s no question about it--that was a huge factor,” Maxson said. “That’s such an integral part of sports these days.”

Maxson will select a committee to conduct a national search for a permanent replacement. He said the search might take as long as six months and Shumard will be considered.

Shumard’s work is cited as one of the keys to the Pyramid’s successful inaugural year. He was promoted from assistant athletic director to senior director of marketing and donor relations in July, and only recently was promoted to his current post.

He held similar duties in the 49er athletic department since joining its administrative staff in June, 1994, after resigning as athletic director at Cal State Fullerton. He continued in an advisory role for athletics after receiving his promotions.

A 1972 graduate of Long Beach, Shumard’s responsibilities in Long Beach athletics included athletic administration and development. He was chiefly responsible for creating the marketing strategy for the Pyramid, which is exceeding the athletic department’s attendance and financial expectations.

Shumard has occupied a variety of athletic administration posts throughout the Southland, including 13 years as director of community services and special events for the Dodgers. He was the Titans’ athletic director for three years and also served as an assistant athletic director at USC.
