Decathlon Team Falls Short in Super Quiz

Laguna Hills High School emerged as the unofficial winner Saturday of the Super Quiz competition of the California Academic Decathlon, beating out Simi Valley High School and 40 other teams for the top spot.
The Super Quiz, the final and arguably the most intensive portion of the 10-event competition, tests students’ knowledge in a rowdy “College Bowl”-type setting as friends, parents and teachers moan and scream depending on how their team is doing.
The winner of the event often goes on to sweep the California contest and proceed to the national competition, which will be held next month in Atlanta.
How Simi Valley scored in the event remained unknown Saturday because the team failed to place in the top five spots. But regardless of the setback, coach Ken Hibbitts said he believes his students did well with the rest of the test.
“They’re very upbeat and enthusiastic,” Hibbitts said. “They feel confident about their performance.”
Hibbitts said team member Chris Wagner racked up nine of 10 possible answers. The Ventura County team will learn how they did in the Super Quiz today during an awards banquet at which the winner of the entire event will be announced.
