Solution Sought for Parking Problems

Share

A meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall to discuss ways to ease parking problems in downtown Ventura.

Frustrated by a shortage of parking spaces on downtown streets, local merchants have asked city officials to identify temporary solutions until a downtown parking garage is built.

The city has set aside about $2 million to construct a garage and is looking at a lot at Santa Clara and California streets as a possible site.

That project is in the conceptual stages, however, and local business owners and employees are seeking solutions now.

Increased tourist traffic and the elimination of some parking spaces on Main Street as a result of last year’s street widening have exacerbated already congested streets.

Last month, the city agreed to stop ticketing cars parked in city lots on Saturdays. But merchants are suggesting a number of other possible solutions, such as reducing the amount of fines and installing parking meters.

Wednesday’s meeting is open to the public and will be held in City Hall’s community meeting room.
