Ciccarelli Rockets Past Richard

Dino Ciccarelli has won eight fewer Stanley Cups than Maurice Richard, but he now has more goals than the man known as the Rocket.

And maybe this year he can cut the eight Stanley Cups to seven.

Ciccarelli moved past Richard and into 13th place on the all-time goal list Tuesday night with his 545th goal for the Detroit Red Wings in a 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

The Red Wings are running away from the rest of the NHL with 106 points, and it appears Ciccarelli has a chance to break his 15-year championship drought. His move past Richard came a night after Richard’s playground, the Montreal Forum, featured its last Canadiens’ game.

“It’s an honor to be mentioned in the same breath with Richard,” Ciccarelli said. “Especially after watching the game at the Forum last night.”

The victory was the Red Wings’ second in three nights over the Jets.

Washington 9, Vancouver 0--Jim Carey got another shutout, which really wasn’t all that surprising. He has had three in his last four games, seven this season and has allowed only one goal in his last 293 minutes 28 seconds.

Calgary 4, St. Louis 2--Gary Roberts scored two goals in the final 2:26 to give the Flames a victory at home.
