Eggland to Pay $100,000 in FTC Fight: Eggland’s Best Inc. will pay a $100,000 penalty to settle its latest battle with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations that the company made deceptive advertising claims that its eggs don’t raise cholesterol levels. The FTC said it charged Eggland’s Best with continuing to make unfounded health claims, despite a 1994 settlement of similar false-advertising charges. Without admitting that it violated the law, Eggland’s Best agreed to a settlement that calls for the company to pay $100,000 over two years and requires the firm to have scientific evidence to back up its promotional claims. Company President Charles Lanktree said Eggland’s Best still believes that two clinical studies support its advertising claims. The FTC, however, thought the ads made implications that went beyond what was shown in the studies, Lanktree said.
