Board OKs YMCA Day-Care Contract

The South Coast YMCA has won the contract to continue providing extended day care at the school district’s 27 elementary schools.

The decision came after parents packed a school board meeting Monday and made emotional appeals on behalf of the YMCA.

“Don’t interrupt a valued and trusted service,” urged Steve Walsh of Mission Viejo, whose 9-year-old daughter has attended the YMCA since the first grade. “This is an excellent program.”

Capistrano Unified School District’s contract to provide extended day care at the elementary schools was up for bid, because the previous contract with South Coast YMCA had expired.

Identical proposals were submitted by both Children’s World Learning Centers and South Coast YMCA. Trustees awarded the contract to the YMCA because they had developed an outdoor education program, and the district did not want to cause a disruption for students.

Parents who packed the boardroom to voice their support for the YMCA cheered loudly when the decision was made.
