For nearly three decades, Pop has personified the id that rages behind the rock psyche. The raw, primal music he made with the Stooges and as a solo artist has influenced several generations of rockers. Through more metallic terrain and some mainstream detours, he’s always remained steadfast and true to his own basic rock impulses.

“I Wanna Live,” the opening track on his 13th album, seethes with a punk-rock animus that predates the Ramones and “Heart Is Saved” offers a more convincing glimpse of redemption than an army of street-corner pamphleteers.

But Pop has his thoughtful side, too. “Shoeshine Girl” is a haunting love ballad of sorts that sets Pop’s gnarly vocals against an almost delicate, semi-acoustic backdrop, and “Innocent World” finds him crooning wistfully about the blissfully clueless days of youth.

Over the years Pop’s music has become as weathered as he is, yet it hasn’t lost any of its vitality--and it’s vitality rather than innovation that keeps it fresh.

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
