Benjamin H. Stansbury Jr., 61, former city councilman and mayor of Beverly Hills. First elected to the council in 1980, Stansbury served eight years and was twice appointed to one-year terms as mayor, in 1982 and 1987. He was a driving force behind the construction of the lavish Beverly Hills Civic Center, among other public works projects. He also served on a number of regional and national advisory boards, including the Los Angeles Olympic Citizens Advisory Commission. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1957, Stansbury worked as product designer for several companies, winning several national awards. In 1973, he founded his own product development firm, the Stansbury Co. On Monday in Alexandria, Va., of cancer.
