Channel Islands High School is celebrating its 30th anniversary with an open house packed with activities from many cultures Thursday.

“Our open houses are recognized statewide for their multicultural student performances,” said ESL teacher Bill Terrazas. “We draw more than 3,000 people every year.”

The open house will include performances by two bands with student members--El Mariachi Juvenil and El Mariachi Azteca--and the Ballet Folklorico, a Mexican dance group. There will also be performances of Filipino dance and music.

Titled “Three Decades of Excellence,” the open house is a celebration of student achievement, Terrazas said.

Community organizations--including El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, El Centrito de la Colonia and the United Farm Workers--will have informational booths, and the Oxnard Police Department will showcase a program to prevent gang violence, Terrazas said.

The open house is free and begins at 5:30 p.m. with a food fair in the school’s quad at 1400 E. Raiders Way, Oxnard. For more information, call 385-2787.
