Several local teens who took top honors at a recent mathematics competition, MathCounts, earned the right to compete with other top math students from across California for a chance to go to the national competition in Washington, officials said.

Sponsored by UC Irvine’s computer science department, MathCounts includes team and one-on-one contests designed to promote math skills among seventh- and eighth-grade students. More than 170 students from 26 Orange County schools participated.

The students tackled problems such as “What is the 199th digit of the decimal representation of 3/37th?” (The answer: 0.)
