Davis Case to Go to District Attorney

Sheriff’s deputies are expected to present their case today against former Dodger Willie Davis to the Compton-Lynwood District Attorney’s office.

Davis, 55, was arrested at his parents’ home near Gardena early Friday morning after allegedly threatening to kill them and burn down the house unless they gave him $5,000.

He is being held in L.A. County jail on bonds of $150,000 for making terrorist threats and $413 for a previous offense.

On Aug. 12, 1993, Davis was cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana but failed to appear in court. He is scheduled to appear Wednesday on that charge.

Former Nebraska nose tackle Christian Peter entered a no-contest plea to a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace for grabbing a woman around the neck at a Kearney, Neb., bar this month.

Major League Baseball is the target of two class-action lawsuits, drafted by attorney Ron Katz and filed in Alameda County Superior Court, that claim several hundred major league retirees and their heirs are being cheated out of royalties from sales of baseball cards, films and other memorabilia. Baseball officials could not be reached for comment on the suits.

Monica Seles withdrew from the Lipton Championships in Key Biscayne, Fla., because of a shoulder injury, officials said. The $4.1-million event begins Thursday. . . . Tom Gullikson and Billie Jean King will be the men’s and women’s coaches for the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.

Miscellany

Fresno State football Coach Jim Sweeney, 66, underwent surgery on his right leg and kneecap, both broken when his car crashed into a flatbed trailer that was blocking a street at night.

Backup quarterback Billy Joe Hobert signed a multiyear contract with the Oakland Raiders, but the team still considers free agent Jeff Hostetler its starter next season.

San Francisco has withdrawn its request to hold the 1999 Super Bowl, hoping a new stadium for the 49ers will be available in time for the 2001 game.

The Rose Bowl is among the finalists for the 1999 game or the Super Bowl in 2000.

Long Beach heavyweight Jeremey Williams headlines a three-fight card tonight at the Long Beach Pyramid. Williams (24-1, 21 knockouts) will fight Arthur Weathers (22-8-1, 18 KOs).

Also on the card will be two other heavyweight bouts, Eric “Butterbean” Esch against George Clark, and former NFL running back Alonzo Highsmith against Larry Givens.

Bobby Thompson, athletic director at Texas San Antonio; Joseph O’Donnell, the former athletic director at American, and Paul Bubb, interim athletic director at Cal State Northridge, are the finalists for the Northridge athletic director’s job.
