Eighteen schools in the Capistrano Unified district will share grants totaling more than $670,000 for innovative course development, trustees announced this week.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to give schools what they’ve asked for,” Board President Sheila Benecke said.

The biggest share, $75,000, will go to Capistrano Valley High School to develop a computer network center.

According to the school’s proposal, the money will be used to install and implement computer technology in individual classrooms so that students and teachers will be able to communicate with each other and the community.

The other grants, which ranged from $8,000 to $69,000, will be used for several projects, including multimedia centers and Internet programs.

Benecke said the winning proposals were chosen from 38 applications submitted by schools in the district. Money for the grants was set aside when school board trustees drew up the 1995-96 budget. An additional $10,000 was donated by Allergan Inc. in February for supporting mathematics and science education within the district.
