From Times Wire Reports

A powerful earthquake of 6.9 magnitude jolted the remote Xinjiang region, killing at least 24 people and knocking down buildings, the Central Seismological Agency said. Officials at the Xinjiang Earthquake Bureau said more than 50 other people were injured in the quake. The number of casualties was expected to rise because communication to the worst-hit areas was cut off by the quake. Xinjiang is in the far northwest of China. The epicenter of the quake was located 35 miles northeast of the city of Kashi.
