Hardly Just a Local Saint

Share

I read Cathy Curtis’ review of the Byzantine art exhibit held at CSUF (“East Meets East in Fullerton,” Feb. 13). One of the icons that she critiqued was titled “Theotokos.” Ms. Curtis describes the lady as “presumably a local saint.”

To those who speak Greek, and, more importantly, to all Orthodox faithful, “Theotokos” translates as “God bearer,” the title bestowed on Mary, the virgin mother of Jesus. Therefore, it is inappropriate to refer to her as merely a local saint. For Orthodoxy, she is truly universal.
