Raise OKd for College Service Employees
After months of negotiations, district and union officials agreed Friday on a 5.1% pay raise for service employees at the county’s three community colleges.
The raise--which matches pay increases given to faculty and college managers earlier this month--is the first significant raise that nonteaching employees have received since 1991. It will be retroactive to July 1, 1995, if approved by the board of trustees next month.
All employees received a 1% raise in the 1994-95 academic year.
Philip Westin, chancellor of the three-college district, said the board felt that the district’s service employees--who range from library clerks to custodians--deserved the same raise as other employees.
“I am delighted they accepted it,” Westin said.
The vote by union members was nearly unanimous, union official Gregory Cross said.
Improved state funding and an agreement that--for the first time--linked faculty raises to the district’s financial outlook made the raises possible.
