Council Opposes Passage of Measure S

The City Council took a stand this week against Measure S, which seeks to block construction of a commercial airport at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, set to close in 1999.

City officials said they want to see the air station converted into an international airport, despite opposition from the South County cities that favor the measure.

“There is no land left in Orange County where we could develop a commercial airport that would really benefit the county,” Councilman Don Bankhead said. The station “is an airport and has been an airport for 54 years.”

Bankhead and his colleagues on the council urged voters to defeat Measure S Tuesday. The ballot measure would overturn Measure A, which was passed narrowly by county voters in 1994 and supports the airport plan.

Airport opponents say that the project would be costly, would increase traffic congestion and noise, and cause property values to fall.
