Nearly 100 Are Rescued From Breakwater

Nearly 100 fishermen had to be rescued from an ocean breakwater in San Pedro when their Saturday morning idyll turned into a harrowing brush with high tides, stiff winds and big surf.
The group of mostly men and boys had been fishing from the rock wall on Cabrillo Beach that forms the outer wall of Los Angeles Harbor when the unexpectedly harsh conditions cut them off from the shore.
Los Angeles city lifeguards combined with lifeguards and firefighters from Los Angeles County to pluck many of the anglers from the rocks. Lifeguards walked the rest across the breakwater to the beach.
Several people fell into the 56-degree water, but no one was injured. The breakwater was closed to fishing for the remainder of the day.
