Nature Center in Friendship Park

Share

Thank you for your article (March 12) on the proposed “nature center” at Friendship Park in San Pedro. Our family is strongly opposed to this project. We cannot understand why Supervisor Deane Dana continues to push it. The community does not want it and it would be an environmental disaster for the park.

It is a misconception to think that the project has stirred controversy only “in exclusive enclaves of the Palos Verdes Peninsula,” or that the lawsuit against it is being brought only by “well-heeled Palos Verdes Peninsula homeowners.” A large portion, if not the majority, of the opposition is from the much less exclusive enclaves of San Pedro. The Friends of Friendship Park, which brought the lawsuit, is headquartered in San Pedro and plenty of decidedly non-well-heeled San Pedro residents, ourselves included, have contributed money to the legal fund.

We resent being characterized by Dana as “radical opponents.” We are about as politically uninvolved as the average person, but Dana and Donald Knabe are doing a very good job of changing that.
