Georgetown thought it caught a break.

Marcus Camby, Massachusetts’ All-American center, picked up his fourth foul with 12:34 remaining in the East Regional final at the Georgia Dome. But Minutemen Coach John Calipari has been through this before with his star, so he knew what to do.

“Marcus has been in foul trouble this year,” Calipari said. “But I’m not afraid to play Marcus in that situation because he’s very smart. Marcus knows what we can do out there.”

Massachusetts led, 55-41, when Camby left the game. But Camby didn’t sit long.

Calipari kept Camby on the bench when Massachusetts was on defense, but Camby repeatedly returned on offense. In and out he went, and Massachusetts’ lead kept growing. Camby stayed cool and the Hoyas’ break never materialized in an 86-62 Massachusetts victory.
