World IN BRIEF : LIBYA : 400 Prisoners Said to Be Free After Riot

A prison riot killed 16 guards and freed at least 400 prisoners, mostly antigovernment soldiers and Islamic militants, according to reports reaching Egypt. The riot reportedly took place Thursday in Al Kuwaifiya, about 13 miles northeast of the Mediterranean city of Benghazi, according to travelers from Libya and Libyan opposition groups in Egypt. The escapees were believed to be armed.
