UCI’s Tennis Team Upsets 16th-Ranked Harvard, 4-3

UC Irvine, ranked 24th in the nation, pulled off its second upset of the season, beating No. 16 Harvard, 4-3, in a nonconference men’s tennis match Sunday at UC Irvine.

The teams split the six singles matches but UC Irvine won two of three doubles matches to earn the final point.

The key match was between UC Irvine’s Steve Tallakson and Cameran Lindee and Harvard’s Paul Tseng and Thomas Blake at No. 2 doubles. Tseng and Thomas are ranked 33rd in the nation.

Tallakson and Lindee were down, 6-4, in the tie-breaker but rallied to win. Lindee also won in singles, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 5.

Also in singles: UC Irvine’s Marc Tardif won at No. 1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4; and Julian Foxon won at No. 2, 6-4, 7-6.

Thomas Bohun and Robin Walker won, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles for the Anteaters (9-5), who also beat No. 14 California earlier this month.

Harvard is 9-6.

In nonconference baseball:

Wichita State 4, Long Beach State 3--Brian Preston hit a three-run homer in the first inning as visiting Wichita State (11-2) opened a 4-0 lead.

Long Beach State (18-11) scored single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. Will Skett and Jeff Tagliaferri each had two hits for Long Beach, which had eight.
