Super Seder Ceramics

With Passover just around the corner, the time has come to dust off the old Seder plate and get rid of all the leavened goods in the house. And maybe it’s also time for a new Seder plate as a reward for clearing out all that hametz.

For the record:

The March 28 Cookstuff column included an item about the flavored cooking oil sprays from Tryson House that was illustrated with a photograph of another brand, World Cuisine flavored cooking oil sprays from Columbus Foods. World Cuisine Oils, available in Italian, Oriental, Southwestern and Cajun flavors, use a non-aerosol pump, delivering 0.12 grams fat (less than 1 calorie) per spray. At specialty stores, or directly from (800) 407-6006.

Branah Layah, a North Hollywood artist “inspired by her father’s humorous way of looking at life,” as she says, has made a perfect set for the holidays. These hand-painted glazed ceramic pieces--Seder plate, matzo plate and Elijah’s cup--have a wonderful childish whimsy but still show respect for tradition.

They are available at Mise en Place in Los Feliz; Gallery Judaica and the Museum of Tolerance in West L.A.; the IMP in Santa Monica; Abi’s, Adele’s, Cristal Palais, House of Judaica and Shalom House in the San Fernando Valley; and the Golden Dreidel in Orange County.

But be warned, whimsy does not come cheap: The Seder plate lists for $600 and the matzo plate and Elijah’s cup are $150 each.

The Chef is In

Always wanted a chef in the house? Now you can have one. Granted, at 11 inches tall, he’s going to have a tough time reaching the range, but these ceramic statues from Sonoma artist Cynthia Hipkiss are well worth having anyway. They’re custom-made, so you can get them holding different foods. Feel like fish today? How about cake? Call Shorebirds in Tiburon at (415) 435-0888.
