Palmdale Airport

Re “Expansion of Palmdale Airport Urged,” March 13: The county supervisors are correct in urging Mayor Richard Riordan to consider expanding the above airport. It’s quite clear and certain that Palmdale and Lancaster are growing into major metropolises and will need an international airport of their own anyway.

Since the Palmdale facility is very spacious, the boxed-in layout of LAX can be avoided, making the former much more accessible and convenient to get to, eliminating traffic jams in the process. For a fraction of the horrendous cost of building a “landfill airport”--an alternative in the city’s master plan--a very efficient high-speed commuter system could connect the Los Angeles Basin with the Antelope Valley, preventing the mutilation of the Santa Monica Bay.

That “back to the trains” is a global trend is well-demonstrated by Europe and Japan, as well as the East Coast of this country.
