Line-Item Veto

Share

Re “Kicking a Slat From Pork Barrel,” editorial, March 18: I am concerned about the possibility of arbitrary presidential line-item vetoes and the kind of congressional back-scratching needed to get a two-thirds majority to override them.

Why not give the president a line-item veto that allows an override, line by line, by a simple majority? If Congress chooses to override more than one line-item on a single vote (or all of the line-item vetoes in a bill) a two-thirds majority is appropriate, but a partial veto should be canceled by a simple majority to prevent abuse by the president.
