One Water District May Buy Another

The board of directors of the Mesa Consolidated Water District on Thursday will consider increasing its service area by buying the Santa Ana Heights Mutual Water District.

The merger could benefit current Mesa Consolidated customers in the long run, because more people would be helping the district repay its debt, reducing the cost to all, said spokeswoman Lisa Lawson.

Mesa Consolidated is one of six private companies and public agencies that have been asked to submit a proposal to buy the water agency.

The Santa Ana Heights water agency serves 2,200 customers in a small, unincorporated area next to Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.

There is already some overlap between the two agencies, Lawson said. Mesa Consolidated does maintenance work for the Santa Ana Heights system.

Santa Ana Heights has asked that proposals be submitted to it by March 31. No purchase price has been determined yet.
