San Gabriel Valley : Linda Sarver Chosen as Mayor by Colleagues on Council
Councilwoman Linda Sarver will be sworn in as mayor of Covina next week after being chosen by her council colleagues.
“I never even pictured myself as council member,” said Sarver. “I plan to work hard as mayor. It’s a real honor.”
Sarver succeeds Councilman Thomas O’Leary, who is stepping down after 27 months in the post. Councilman Tom Falls was named mayor pro tem.
Sarver, 47, helped lead a recall of the entire council in 1993 after it passed a controversial 6% utility tax. She was elected that year along with two others who rode the anti-tax wave to seats on the council. Once in office, they approved a larger tax in order to balance the budget. Councilmen John Wilcox and Chris Christensen opposed her selection as mayor, citing that reason.
